Fine allround performance by Swapan Mitra and Asjit Jayaprakasham steered Orissa to an innings and 35-run win over Assam on the last day of their three-day Ranji Trophy East Zone match at Permit Ground in Balasore today. This was Orissa’s 11th overall win in 95 First-Class matches and 10th win in 30 matches against Assam. This was also fourth innings victory for Orissa over Assam.
Jayaprakasham and Mitra hit unbeaten century each to enable Orissa declare at 419 for four after they were put to bat by Assam captain Sushil Uzir. Karun Dubey and Anil Bhardwaj also batted well in the first innings, contributing half-century each to the total.
In reply, Assam made 203 in the first innings to concede a lead of 216 runs. Forced to follow on, the visitors were bowled out for 181 in their second innings. Mitra followed his century with with a five-wicket haul in the second innings. Harmohan Praharaj led Orissa in this match, replacing Somnath Sahoo.
